Colonial Forces Study Group (Qld)

Queensland Military History: 1860-1901

Researching Queensland's Military History

Due to the paucity of documented material in the public arena, scholars, family historians, local historical societies and museums, and other interested individuals have not been able to readily access the information they require on Queensland’s colonial forces.

To complicate matters for researchers, there is no single archival record series dealing with all facets of the colonial forces and the story has to be laced together from many sources. Records as varied as annual defence reports, gazetted orders and personnel movements, correspondence records of government departments, newspaper accounts, images and plans will be examined. This project will collate and analyse data from these sources and present it in the very accessible format of website and publications.

The Colonial Forces Study Group aims to document and acknowledge the role and contribution of citizen military forces in Queensland, by:

  1. Systematically recording all available data on the function of those forces within civil and military society.
  2. Using this website to disseminate the results of study and analysis to the wider community, and be a focal point for public inquiries.
  3. Undertaking original research and producing articles, indexes, and other publications, and
  4. Delivering small static displays to suitable venues such as local libraries, museums and heritage places across the State.
